yumminess

for dinner tonight i made some fresh guacamole from a perfectly amazing avocado i picked up yesterday on a street produce cart in williamsburg [brooklyn, not colonial] - why do i not do this more often?! oh my goodness i had forgotten how yummy avocados are - c'mon i'm from california you think they'd be more of a staple in my cuisine.

so. these culinary thoughts reminded me that i am cooking dinner for a friend this week who just had ACL-surgery. but she's allergic to garlic and onions. i'm at a complete loss! everything i cook has either one of these essentially yummy ingredients in it [including my guacamole, mmm....] so all of you much more experienced cooks... any thoughts or suggestions on delectable onion/garlic-free dinner entrees? :)

or maybe i should just bring her a few of these:

new york's very own levain cookies
. yes they are a.ma.zing!!! mom and dad can attest. i think that's all i'd like to be eating after surgery :)

mom told me all about those cookies, we'll have to stop by that place when we come later this year.

how weird is this, jooj. i just brought dinner to MY friend who had ACL surgery! weird! I made chicken tacos in my crock pot. no onions or garlic. unless you want them.

here's an easy garlic/onion free chicken recipe that we love.

mom says she is sorry but all of her recipes have garlic or onion as well. we were both longing for levain!

You could do a soup: something like potato leek that would be soothing and onion-free. People scoff at carrot soup, but that is also delicious. And if soup is not your thing, perhaps some kind of pasta with spring vegetables like asparagus or sugar snap peas, with a splash of lemon and some parmesan.

Probably don't want to go with leeks, as they are in the alliaceae family with onions and garlic. She may be allergic to those too.
Your friend is most likely used to regular recipes that leave off the garlic and onion. I would just make sure you ramp up the other seasonings. A stir fry would be nice, especially if you find some good fresh veggies... saute in peanut oil with lots of ginger, brown sugar, and a nice soy sauce. You could add sauteed chicken or caramelized tofu, and some cashews. Super yummy with brown rice, especially if it is brown basmati. She'll never know the garlic was left out!
I found that when people brought me dinners, there weren't a lot of fresh veggies, and I really started craving them. So what ever you do, make sure you take lots of veggies or a really nice salad! Good luck!

You could make her soup. Chicken noodle doesn't necessarily require onions or garlic. Also, homemade mac'n'cheese. I'm obsessed with that stuff and you don't usually need garlic or onions for that either.

Cookies are always a good idea.
